In 1998 dr Hendrik de Swardt got his first computer. In those early days the availability of proper veterinary software was a problem. Dr de Swardt teamed up with an engineer named Anton Barnard and in 1991 his practice was running on his own software named Microvet. Since 1992 many vetrinary practices have installed Microvet.

The name Otomys has an intersting origin. We wanted a typical South African name that would indicate that we are in the software business and would also tell more about us.  We brain stormed and used the following facts to help us in the choice of our name:

• Microvet is our main product and it is specialised software designed for veterinarians. Because vets work with animals, we thought that the name of an animal will be suitable for our company.

• A mouse was chosen because it is an animal and each computer has a mouse. The mouse is the link between the veterinarian and the computer.

• There are many different mice species to choose from. We looked at all the different indigenous South African mice. Otomys was chosen because it is a true South African mouse. There are 5 species of Otomys endemic to South Africa that does not occur anywhere else.

• Otomys is the Greek word for “The Large Eared Mouse”. The main characteristic of Otomys is the large ears. Our motto is to Listen to our clients. With the large ears of Otomys, we are better equipped to listen to the needs of our clients.
