How to add and edit categories

Categories are there to analyse the practice. Use the categories to determine the profit in the various sections of the practice.

It is not advisable to change the categories on a regular basis. You can set them up initially to suit your practice. Changes made to categories do not work backwards. If you have been using the categories for a while and then change them, the summary of transactions done before the change may be incorrect. Therefore, we did not add features to Microvet to allow you to easily change the categories. DO NOT change or delete category 11 (pet food) because the Niche report uses this category.

Exit from Microvet on ALL the computers
Make a backup
Do these changes on the FILE SERVER only
Click on START
Click on PROGRAMS
Click on MS DOS PROMPT
(You will have a black screen, type the following and press Enter after each line)
CD\MFW5
DBU
(You will have a blue screen)
Press Enter
Use the down arrow and press Enter on CATEGORY.DBF
(Navigate with the arrows, because the mouse is not active now)
Press Enter on OK
Press F5 (Browse)
Press Enter on Database
(Now you have a light blue screen)

How to add a new category
Go to the bottom of the list, go past the last record
Type the next number and a description
Press the UP arrow to save the changes

How to edit a category
Press Enter on a field if you want to go to Edit mode.
Press Enter again to save the changes.
There are two columns. The column on the left must have a unique number. It is better not to change the numbers. You can change one description.
(DO NOT change the description of Pet Food.)

How to delete a record
Hi-light on the record that you want to delete.
Press the Delete button once

The record will still be visible but flagged to be deleted. At the top it will indicate <DELETED>. If you press the Delete button a second time, the <DELETED> indicator will disappear and the record will not be deleted. DO NOT delete the Pet Food category. You have to PACK the table to remove the deleted items. When all the records that you want to delete are flagged, do the following:
Press ESC
Press F6 (Utility)
Press enter on Pack
Press Y to Pack Category.dbf

How to exit from DBU
Press ESC once or twice until you get the message: Exit to DOS?
Press Y
(You are back in DOS)
Type the following and press Enter after each line:
DEL   CA*.IDX
EXIT

Select a code page
Start Microvet
A message will appear: "Code page not selected"
Select WINDOWS
Click on SELECT
