How to setup a new file server

It may happen that you have a new computer that is faster than the current file server and that you rather want to use the faster computer as the file server.

Or your current file server needs repairs and you want to use one of your workstations temporary as the file server.

These instructions will do the following:

1.  Declare a new file server

2.  Redirect the network settings

3.  Transfer Microvet data from the old server to the new server

4.   Redirect the Microvet database directory

5.   Install the backup procedure on the new file server

1.  Declare a new file server

Open the CONTROL PANEL

Double click on NETWORK

Click on FILE AND PRINT SHARING

Check both boxes

Click on IDENTIFICATION and get the computer name e.g. NEWSERVER

Open MY COMPUTER

Click with the right mouse button on your (C:) drive

Click on SHARING

Share as C, share type FULL

2.  Redirect the network settings

Do this on every workstation (including the old file server)

Open WINDOWS EXPLORER

Click on TOOLS

Click on DISCONNECT NETWORK DRIVE

Disconnect the F drive

Click on TOOLS

Click on MAP NETWORK DRIVE

Choose drive F

Type in the path   \\NEWSERVER\C  (use the computer name and the shared name)

Check the box reconnect at log on

3.  Transfer Microvet data from the old server to the new server

Go to the old file server

Open WINDOWS EXPLORER

Copy the MFW5 directory from your (C:) drive to the (F:) drive

(Replace if necessary)

If you copy the Microvet directory to a new computer where Microvet has never been installed

or a computer where the hard drive has been formatted from, you have to copy an extra file.

This file is VFP300.ESL and sits in your C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM (or C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 on Win XP/NT/2000) directory on your old file server.

Copy this file to F:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM (or F:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 on Win XP/NT/2000) directory.

4.  Redirect the Microvet database directory

Start Microvet on the new file server

It should automatically re-index

Click on FILE

Click on LOCAL SETUP

Check the database directory on each computer

On the new file server it must be C:\MFW5\

On all the other workstations (old server included) it must be F:\MFW5

5.  Install the backup procedure on the new file server

Install the backup routine on the new file server according to the users’ guide.

WARNING:

If you map the network incorrectly, you may have a double set of data.

Test the system by adding a new client and see if you can edit this new client on each computer.
